Tom Tindale won Southland's second three day 'Tour of Southland" in 1957 with little effort.
Although only finishing 19th in the final stage from Lumsden to Invercargill, via Gore, his aggregate time left him well clear of Harry Hubber at the end of the 262 miles.

Tom Tindale formerly from England, received a arousing reception from the crowd waiting for the finish in Tay Street.
The hero of the last day was undoubtedly, Tindale's clubmate and stage winner, Alex Panagiotidis.
Alex had more than his share of bad luck, but he put all that behind him on the Saturday, knowing that he could not get up to win the tour.
Panagiotidis started out aggressively and was heard to say "The bunch wont see me today".  The 'flying greek' was unstoppable, with the best weather of the tour and  some of the riders reaching speeds of 40 m.p.h. they could not catch Panagiotidis.
T. Cameron (Christchurch) and R. Hill (Timaru) managed to stay close, but Panagiotidis won the sprint at Gore, won the Edendale Hill climb easily, and fought off a late challenge from Cameron to win at the end, in Tay Street.
Along with Tindale, Panagiotidis was a popular rider with the crowd and did not disappoint them.
He was probably pondering afterwards though what could have been, if he had some luck in the first two days, instead of punctures, broken chains and spills.
Harry Hubber, the 36 year old farmer, managed second place and it was only Tindale's brillant time trials that beat him.
'King of the Mountains' went to John Holloway, the 20 year old.
