Southland Tennis team to feature in championships....

Southland Junior Tennis meet a stern test today when they meet Otago,  South Canterbury and Canterbury......

Last season the Southland Juniors created history by reaching the semi-final of the Dominion Wide competition.  Southland's chances of winning the Slazenger Shield have been greatly strengthened by the inclusion of Robin Welsh, now a top winning junior Hawkes Bay player but is eligible to play for Southland.  He is a versatile player who is able to extend the best players In the competition, as shown in the last junior championships when he was beaten in the final by R. Wong.  The only other player from last years team to return is Colin Mair, although a surprise selection his experience on grass and a dogged approach to fight back won the selectors over.  Cliff Young could be a good double partner for Welsh in the doubles. 
A rapid rise of young Bluff player Alan Ramsay, presents as one of the most promising players on the Southland scene.  He has a natural ability for the game with great ground strokes and considerable smashing and volleying abilities. 
L. Townsend, Otago's All Black half back who won the Southland Tennis championship last year will defend his title at the South Island Champions this month.
