By defeating Otago High School Old Boys 6-2 at a hockey match in 1936 at Queens Park in Invercargill Central managed to win the Dawson Cup.
Central deserved to win as it played with more cohesion and greater pentrative power.
Play was fairly even in the first half with Central only head 2-1.
The second half was a different story and it was due to the close backing up and rapid interceptions of the three halves; Field, McLean and Semmens.
Martin played with less finesse than normal, but his outside forwards failed to pick up many passes that could have lead to goals.
Gurr was called upon to do more than his fair share of work, Hughes, H. Kennedy and Mullen broke through fast and often.
Cambridge was sound without being brillant.
The teams were:
Central (white); Chisnall, Patton, Lythgoe, Field, C. McLean, Semmens, Speirs, Mullen, H. Kennedy, Hughes, W. Crosbie.
