I see YACCK are talking about the old days and I found notes from a game I watched in 1957 and it goes like this......
PictureRangi Christie a Bluff Forward who was outstanding for his team on Saturday.
Pirates and Invercargill has joined Marist at the top of the table after round 4 of club rugby.  The game of that week was Bluff beating Star, not that it was a surprise going on last years success of the Bluff team but more about the way they had started the season with 2 straight defeats.  A half time reshuffle of its backline saw a deficit of 13 points turn into a win in the last 40 minutes.  Star had played all the first 40 min in Bluff's half,  and had virtually pinned them to their line which Bluff found had to combat.  As Star's forwards were the dominate feature, their back prospered from all the great ball they were receiving.  Bluff's ball handling was atrocious which resulted in two tries to A. Soper, the rangy centre.  At halftime G. Horsfall was switched from full-back to first five R. Wairau from first five to centre and J. Robinson centre to full-back.  After this theBluff backs delighted the crowd which inspired to backs to continually whip the ball through the backs at a frightening speed.
Collegiate one of the other unbeaten teams in the comp went down to Pirates which was a game marked from strong defence on both sides.  This showed by only one try being scored by as both teams cancelled each other out and it was only through the boot that made the difference.  Although both forward packs were equally as good the Pirates pack were more effective in their play.  The only try was scored by R. Smith at the 55 min after a great breakaway from a lineout saw Ray Smith tackled by the Collegiate full-back but the momentum of his powerful running saw him score.
Goal kicking was a key to the game and this is where Ted Mortimer (Pirates) kicked three penalty goals one from halfway.  PJ Lyons kicked two penalties for Collegiate.  Final Score 14-6
