Paul Radka works hard for Pirates against Collegiate in 1982.......

Pirates had a good win over Collegiate 25-7 in 1982.  The scores 7-7 at half time meant it could have been anyone's game but it was the wind that gave Pirates the advantage when they turned around.  Their long raking kicks meant Collegiate were on the back foot all half and they would have realised they should have been well ahead at the half time.
Pirates were on a rebound from their loss to Star the previous week and with the loss of their beloved "Helen Brown" the previous Saturday they were out to make amends.
In the tight Jeff Rogers and Geoff Clark, at lock Paul Radka and the loose forwards, Trevor Popham and Neale Smith all came out on top in the rucks and mauls.
Collegiate held their own in the lineouts and scrums with hooker, Maurice Kahu and prop, Peter Masefau playing some good rugby.  At No. 8 Donald Sutherland supported his forwards well and was dominant in that area.
First five eight, Murray Brown won his place in the team due to Paul Macfie being injured and showed he was a player to watch for the future.
Bruce Pascoe and Ross Polson combined well to break the advantage line and Sean Bellew was always there to finish off.  Full back Kevin Burns was dominant, yet again.
The player of the day would have to have been Bruce Shields, the pirate's hooker, who would be looking to get higher honours.
Huw Davies, centre for Collegiate was always threatening the Pirate's line while Peter Marshall was safe with the up and unders.
Pirates: Sean Bellew (2), Murray Brown (1), Kevin Burns (2con) (3PG).
Collegiate:  Huw Davies (1) Pope Wilson (1PG)
Referee Mr David Bishop.

I remember this game but Collegiate still managed to make it into the Section A along with, Invercargill, Bluff, Mataura, Old Boys, Pirates, Woodlands and Star.
I remember we had Albion to thank for drawing with Star and that Waikaka did not score the points they needed against Pioneer.
