The Southland Under 18 netball team in 1983 qualified for a place in the national championships. The team won the right by beating four other teams in the round robin.
Robyn Broughton, the coach said the success was due to a lot of work being done in the lower age groups.
The Under 16 team was first equal with Otago in their tournament and the Under 20 was runner up to Otago who beat them comfortably.
Robyn said it was because of the high goal average and team work that got it through.
The following ten players were selected to attend an intensive regional coaching school in 1984: Phillipa Clifford, Christine Wyering, Megan Wills, Sharalyn Roden, Loreen Phillips, Marie Forde, Carolyn Stewart, M. Potter, Rosemary Ryan and A. Osborne.
