PictureRiders outside the start at Invercargill Town Hall. Harry Hubber is far right.
Harry Hubber the veteran of Cycling in Southland was rapt with the first day of the Tour of Southland in 1961 where he led the field of riders into Tuatapere. It was a credit to Hubber, the 36 year old, as only 13 riders managed to finish the gruelling
98 mile ride from the Invercargill Town Hall.

Hubber was a popular winner on this day and the home town cheered him on. The harder the ride the better Hubber rode, he met a howling gale, wind and rain.
All credit to Hubber, but it was Holloway that won on aggregate, winning both hill climbs, second in both primes and got pipped by Hubber for second in the sprint home.
