The Southland cross country championships was held at Wyndham in 1986, and Saint Pauls looked like the club to beat.  David Findlay and Chris Goodall, was looking to battle out the senior title against Invercargill pair, Robin Todd and Ian Pugh.

Michael Gray of Gore had dominated the junior section and Gail Kirkman or Margo Pryde would be the favourites to win the women's 6000 metres.
In 1986 the main interest was probably in the junior women's race with Juliana Foggo, Andrea Diack, and Lisa Owen.
It was interesting to see the appearance of Fiordland member, Kerry Steel, who had just won the New Zealand women's junior title.
