Eastern had a relatively easy win over Southern in 1976 but it was not through the high possession rate as Southern had the ball more than Eastern.

It was Southern's inability to turn possession into points and they would have been disappointed that they did not take the opportunities given to them.
For Eastern there was  no-one better than No 8, Don Hay, who not only led from the front but scored two great tries.
The first try was the way he crept into the back line and threw a great dummy that really sucked in the defence and then barged his way through two more tackles to score.  He could not have ben such a dominant force without support from Jeff Lamb who's all round play was exceptional.
Ken Moseby came into the centre position for Eastern and showed his pace that made it hard for the Southern boys.
Wingers, Peter Peter Ross and Warren Peterson with the former having a couple of great runs and on one occassion he beat at least five defenders.  Peterson was tight on defence and at one stage made a cracking tackle on his opposite, Shane O'Donnell.
Eastern full back, Neville Broderick, straightened up the back line which gave his outside backs the gaps needed.
Fergus Dermody, Gerald Dermoday and Rex Kingdom won the majority of the line out ball for Southern but they could not captalise on their good work.
The only positive for the Southern backs was the long range punts of Jeff Gardiner.
Eastern:  Don Hay (2) Ross Broderick, McGowan (1), Moseby (1Con)
Southern:  Shane O'Donnell (1) Keiren Fahy (1PG).
