I seen someone talking about country day and I have found these old programmes and I actually wondered who won?  I do remember it as a big thing and am so pleased to see it revived as it gives me some great reading.

The official programme states that: Players from all over Southland will be on parade before the Southland selectors today, making their first bid for inclusion in the Southland representative side which this year is to tour as far north as Whangarei.
A Southland team has already been selected this season, but it was chosen larely on form displayed last year and there is ample opportunity for young players to advance their claims to representative status.
In contrast with previous the province seems well served with good backs. What the selectors will be seeking is a big, strong forward pack who can live up to the reputation of Southland packs of the past.
Western, holders of the Sports Trust Cup and champion sub-union, meets Town in the main game at Rugby Park.  Western last played Town in 1954 when the game resulted in a 3-3 draw and in 1950 Town beat Western 6-3. Only six of the players who represented Town last season are included in the team for today - R.W. Gilson, R. Johnson, A.J. Tait, H. O'Neill, A.L.Thomas, and I.W. Todd.  New caps in the town team include E. M Mortimer (Pirates - full back) , A.J. Daly (Marist - 1st five)., M. Hern, (Invercargill No. 8)., G. Erskine (Invercargill - flanker)., M. O'Neill (Marist) and W. Mathieson (Star, both locks) and R. Christie (Bluff - prop).
Seven of the Western side played on Country Day last season and two Southland representatives are included in the side, R.S. Terry and K.F. Laidlaw, who played his rugby in town last season and won a place in the Southland team.
