The annual Oreti Life Saving Club carnival was held at Oreti Beach in December 1972. The top surfers from Dunedin were a feature of the carnival. It saw Michael Borrie and Peter Laing from the St Claires club in action.
Dave Gerrard, the three times national surf champion, and former Commonwealth Games pool medalist, and following competitors were: Steven Laing, Jack Willis, Trevor Allen, John McConnochie, Mike Toomey.
The Southland team consisted of Colin Jones, Tom Pryde, Campbell Ronald and Brent Lamond.
A second team was entered from Southland in the same event and those competitors were: Ken Jones, Brian Warren, Danny Parker and Geoff Fraser.
