Lovey Te Awhe key to Port's win over Blue Sox Invercargill softball 1972.......

Marist got themselves to the top of the Invercargill women's major league softball championship in 1972.   The deightful win was a thrill for Marist with a final score of 6-5.
It was Marist's first three batters; Marie Corkery, Bridget Cullen and Patricia Robinson that all hit safe runs to give their team the lead.
Panthers scored first at the top of the second innings with Marist equalising in their second turn.
Marist grabbed the lead on errors made by Panthers, who then in turn gained points on Marist errors. The teams drew level at the fourth.
A fifth innings run gave Marist the lead 4-3 which Panthers passed by scoring twice at the top of the seventh.
This was when the three above batters hit safely to get the necessary runs to win.
Pitching: Bridget Cullen - 33 batters-5 hits-8 strikeouts-5 walks.
                Jan Grenfell-32 batters-10 hits-2 strikeouts-0 walks.
Hitters:    Marist:  Jenny Lee (2), Marie Corkery (2) Patricia Robinson (2) Mary Craig,                 Bridget Cullen, Mary McKenzie
                Panthers:  Lynley Smith (2), Jan Grenfell, Kath Dodds, Shirley Hale.

Blue Sox was first to score two runs in the bottom of the first innings, against Port, who replied with four runs at the top of the second.  Port went to a 4-2 lead which it never relinquished.
But Blue Sox did not lie down and after five innings caught up to be only one down 4-5.  They scored three runs and with two runners still on base but an out was given.
Pitching:  Lovey Te Awhe -33 batters- 9 hits-6 strikeouts-1 walk.
                 Christine Hocking-39 batters-10 hits-1 strikeout-2walks.
Batting:   Port:  Gail Cooper (2), Lovey Te Awhe (2), Christine Hawkless, Joan Fowler,
                 Joy Hawke, Lani Simeon, Debra Arnett, Sue Kapo.
                 Blue Sox:  Anne Rainbow (2), Crhistine Hocking (2), Glenys Seymour, 
                 Margaret Hocking, Kris Fosbender, Aileen McLeod.
