Tokanui 4, Pioneer 4...1984

Tokanui and Pioneer played out a 4-4 draw in their game at Tokanui yesterday.
Thirty minutes each way was all that was played in the cold, windy conditions.
Ground conditions how ever, were good and both teams took advantage of this to throw the ball around.
Tokanui's backline had its best performance of the season and the guidance of David Wray was obvious.  He set the backline alight with some good running and passing.
Flanker Murray Pickett scored Tokanui's try while Pioneer second five-eight Mark McCarthy reciprocated.
The Pioneer forwards played well wit lock Alan Byrne in good form in the lineouts.
TOKANUI: Murray Pickett (1) try.
PIONEER: McCarthy (1) try.
REFEREE: Mr Murray Jarvis.

Collegiate 15, Waikiwi 6...1984

Some sparkling backline play in the first half sealed a 15-6 victory for collegiate over Waikiwi at Oreti Park.
Waikiwi opened the scoring with a penalty goal from the accurate boot of full back Eugene Skerrett.
However, soon after the Collegiate line was send away by half-back Dave Gibb. From a few metres on his own side of the half-way line second five-eight Donald ward combined hard running and spate of swerves and dummy passes to carve through the Waikiwi defence for the firsst try in the game.  It was converted by first five-eight Pope Wilson.
collegiate kept up the pace and several minutes later launched another back movement for centre Huw Davies to take the ball across the Waikiwi goal-line.
Collegiate dominated the tight phases and Waikiwi committed too many handling errors.
Waikiwi's big experienced forward John Pankhurst played a solid game while Collegiate's Peter Hope, Dave Evans and Ken Condon were standouts in their pack.
Jabbing kicks by Waikiwi did not always get the required effect, because of good positional play the the Collegiate full-back Peter Marshall.
COLLEGIATE:  Donald Ward, Hew Davies (1) tries, Pope Wilson (1) PG (2) Con.
WAIKIWI: Eugene Skerrett (2) PG
REFEREE: Mr R. Russell

Wyndham 15, Old Boys 3

Wyndham had too much strength in the forwards for Old Boys and won 15-3 in the mud at Wyndham.
Almost incessant rain and a paddock with the consistency of a pot of glue made conditions atrocious.
Wyndham scored a try with the game only a minute old and added a penalty goal shortly after to go 7-0 up.
The try was well executed after an Old Boys dropout was run wide through the backs and lock tom Hunter was there to take the final pass inside and go over for the try.
After half-time Old Boys went on to the attack and centre, Ian Ballam kicked a well judged dropped goal to narrow the scores.
Prop, Robin Braithwaite working hard the Wyndham forwards concentrated on driving forward  and half back Geoffrey Winter and first five-eight Jerry Tairoa kept the ball close to the pack.
It was this sort of play which led to tries by flanker Keith Dyer and Winter.  Dyer dived on the ball over the line after Old Boys had been too slow to clear and was caught in possession.
WYNDHAM: Tom Hunter, Geoff Winter, Keith Dyer (1) tries Barry Todd (1) PG
OLD BOYS: Ian Ballam (1) DG
REFEREE: Mr M. Fox.
