Yacck looks at Pirates club notes in 1976.

There was a crucial semi final battle between Star and Pirates about to be played and both will be endeavouring to win to contest the right to play Invercargill the following week in the Galbraith Shield grand final.  At this stage Star would appear to hold the upper hand as over the last two weeks they have secured convincing wins over Old Boys and Collegiate respectively.
Pirates club notes from 17 July 1976 say that the seniors went down to Tokanui 18-13.  Too many mistakes and bad handling in the back line contributed mainly towards the loss as well as aimless kicking and no cover defence.
Having his first game for some time, Nelson McDermott had a good game, being first to the breakdown and tackling well.  Wayne Soper also played well, scoring a good forward's try. Next week against Star in the Galbraith Shield semi-final the team will be expected to settle down and play good constructive football of which they are capable.
Under 20's played in the curtain raiser last Saturday and saw our Under 20's score a win over Invercargill by 10-6.  Geoff Rogers, Dave Clarke and R. Mason toiled hard in the tight, winning a good supply of clean possession assisted by the loose trio of C. Clark, Gary Bekker and Mervyn Eade.
The backs handled and ran well with some penetration. D. Wilson and Neale Smith on the wing being outstanding.  it is encouraging to see this team performing well, as they will be the nucleus of our senior team of the future.
Second Grade Div 1.  won a well deserved game against Marist at Turnbull Thomson by the close score of 20-19. A good team effort with all players combining together and playing as a team.
