A memory about a quilt that was made in Southland for soldiers in World War 1.  During these years women did whatever they could to ensure their men overseas had lots of home comforts so they did not feel too homesick.  Mrs Lucy Pullar who organised the making of the quilt said that she worked at Farmers Co-op in Otautau during the war years and use to travel there each day from Riverton.  Mrs Pullar did end up marrying a man that had come back from war injured, and the couple had many happy memories together before Mr Robert Pullar died in 1959.  During their married life they lived in Invercargill and Mrs Pullar worked at Thomson and Beatties for more than 20 years.  Mr Pullar worked in the Dairy Industry and in that time wrote a book called "By Blueskin Bay", which was published just two years before Robert Pullar's death.

Mrs Pullar then went to live with her sister in Green Lane, Riverton and recalled many happy but also sad memories during her life.  On reflection at the time the quilt was embroidered she remembers many men leaving girlfriends behind when they went to war and on return came back complete with war brides.  This left broken hearts all over the place.
She recalled the McDonalds of the Manse and Charlotte Mills who was a very good dressmaker and Elsa Cupples who taught at the local school.
Some of the other names that were embroidered on the quilt were; Jane B. Cupples (President) Otautau.  Margaret Carrick, Ruby Lindsay, (Otautau), Emily McKinna, Effie Seatter, Daisy Hamilton, Mina Manse, Laura Cupples, Charlotte J. Mills, Mina Hope, Jeannie Adams, Elsa Cupples.

My grandmother would have been the Effie Seatter mentioned in this story. At that time her parents had a farm on the outskirts of Otautau.

Thanks for your comment. Can you imagine what it was like for them in those days. What ever happened to your Grandmother - it would be great to learn a little more about her. Yacck.
