Wayne Tinker forms a great inside combination in Star's win against Waikiwi in 1976.......2/27/2016 Star sent out a warning in 1976 by beating Waikiwi in the first round of the President's Cup 28-9. Star had the advantage of a strong wind behind it in the first half. The team took full advantage of this and points were accumulated at a fast pace in the first half where they were up 25-6. Wayne Tinker (half-back) and Brian McKechnie (first five eight) were the two young players to impress. The former was able to give his partner quick precise ball which McKechnie made the most of. Harry Keil , Kevin Stevens, Phillip Butt and Keith McLeod all played well in the forwards. Waikiwi fought hard but could not match the skill of their opposites. There was good play though from Peter McIntyre, and a 70 yard dash from Ron Davis, who intercepted. Waikiwi forwards had a newcomer in Colin Horton who had previously played for Lincoln College and Lester Ronald played his usual lively game. Ron Cardno's goal kicking was spot on for Star. Star: Rodney Forbes, John Ryder, Phillip Butt (1) Ron Cardno (4 PG) (2Con). Waikiwi: Ron Davis (1) (1PG) Referee: D. Sinclair. Reference: Star wins 28-9. The Southland Times April 1976
