The Bert Crooks coached Marist had too much energy in the main game at Rugby Park in 1966.  The Star backs were not starved off ball but did not make the most of the opportunities given to them, and although their forwards were the bigger pack they could not match the fitness of the Marist pack.

It was the inside backs for Star that did not perform and they looked lethargic.
They could not get the ball out to their keen winger, J. T. Beazley who can easily put points on the board for them.
Marist did not waste any time and scored in the first nine minutes, with the line wide open for B. Burke he scored without a hand being laid on him.
It was the same story for the next try but it was R. Jefferson for Marist this time that raced through to toe a ball and scoop it up to score.
It was left to H. Harris to kick a penalty goal to put them on the board, and 15 minutes later he kicked another goal which would have put Star in a more competitive position, the flags went up but referee Mr E. Baxter did not confirm this.
N. Dallas, half back for Marist scored a solo try which made it 11-3.
It was fitness that ensured Marist kept the foot on the throat, and it was M. Burke that finished Star with a good try.
All fifteen players for Marist played the game at a fast rate of knots with full back J. Cullen outstanding and Vin Nally, P. Killeen and Ken McRae playing well in the forwards.
Marist:  M. Burke, B. Burke, R. Jefferson, Noel Dallas (1) J. Cullen (1Con)
Star:  H. Harris (1PG)
