Someone was asking about Country Day in 1957.  Town  beat Western in the last minute when Town scored a winning try in the last minute. Ron Gilson was the man of the moment when he scored the try and then Ted Mortimer converted it to give Town a win by 2 points.

Western, holder of the Sports Trust trophy would have thought themselves a bit unlucky as the try was scored against the run of play but it was the initiative of town that gave them the points to win the game.
The Country Day games were watched by a crowd of 5,700, but gate takings were down on last year.
Eastern was too powerful for Southern and scored any easy win 32-6.
The game was one-sided with Eastern dominating in all facets of the backline. Their handling skills were far superior and their tackling was deadly.  Only sound tackling by Southern stopped the Eastern team scoring more points, and Lloyd Ashby led his backs into the attack. This game was a personal triumph for Lloyd Ashby (Mataura) as the 14 points he kicked on the day notched his 100 points for the season.
Ray Todd, the winger from Wyndham was again in good form, and scored two excellent tries
Although in saying this the Southern forwards did put up a good struggle
The find of the day was Watson Archer, Eastern, Five Eight, who was easily the best back on the field.  His speed and agility led to many points for his team.  Although scoring only one try himself he set up several tries and cut the Southern backline to ribbons.
J. Allison (Edendale) the speedy winger, also played a sound game, and scored one excellent runaway try.  In the forwards Arthur McMeeken played a great game and was a thorn in the side of Southern, always menacing to the inside backs.
