A record in swimming has been set up in Invercargill by the Fenton family  Three sons of Mr M.P. Fenton, himself a prominent swimming administrator, between them hold all 12 swimming records at the Marist School in the city.
Two of Mr Fenton's sons, Michael, who is 22 and Barry, 21 have left the school but their names remain on the record book.  The third son, Tim, who is 14 is still a pupil at the school, and holds eight of the 12 school records.
About 200 boys at the school are eligible to compete for these records, and it is remarkable that all 12 records are held by members of he one family.
It is not that the records have been created against weak opposition for there are other good swimmers at the school and the boys have proved their worth in open competition.  All three have held Southland championshps and all three have represented Southland at the New Zealand championships.
Two of them are Southland record holders.  Tim  holds the junior boys' 220 yards and 100 yards freestyle records, while Michael hold the 100 yard butterfly record.  Tim recently broke a 220 record which had stood for more than 20 years.
Both brothers have held records which have since been beaten by Tim.
Already holder of the Southland junior 100 yards freestyle record with a time of 61.4sec. Tim Fenton added the 220 yrds record to his list of achievements when he shattered the late Paul McInnes's time in a solo swim against the clock.
McInnes had the record of 2.40.2 in 1936 and Fenton seems certain to eclipse his older brothers, Michael and Barrie in other divisions and may yet achieve even higher honours.
