The 1983 netball season ended with a spectacular game between Brigadiers A and Rata A with Brigadiers being the victors winning 26-21.  Rata really had nothing to play for as they had already won the competition, and this meant that they were entitiled to go to play the top Otago team in the regional play offs.
There had been 14 weeks of intensive competition with Rata A only suffering two losses and a draw to be at the top of the table.  Brigadiers A were second and St Mary's were third.

It was Brigadiers that everything to play for as they did not want to go to third.  It started in the defence line with Pam Egan and Sue Pomare dominating, and chasing every loose ball available.  They hassled the Rata attacking line and ensured they had to work hard to get the ball through to their shoots.
The centre court made the most of their defences hard work and got good passes into goal shoot, Teresa Panagiotidis  who shot well for her team.

Kaye Wynn and Diane Reefman tight in defence against United in 1983...

The surprise of the final week was when Brigadiers B beat United 32-16.  United would have been disappointed with their effort.  It was without two of their key players in Robyn Broughton and Elaine Murdoch and then Jenny Mason had to come off due to injury in the second half.
Shoots for Brigadiers, Carol Watson and Pauline Tawhaio was outstanding and this was helped by the defence of Kaye Wynn and Diane Reefman who gave them their opportunities.

Mary Jane Wills and Lynne McKenzie play fast attacking game for St Marys against Ngawai in 1983....

St Mary's beat Ngawai 24-9 but the score did not indicate the game, which was closer than read.
Ngawai played well throughout the court but just could not finish off.  Ngawai's shoots, Pixie Raurimu and Lisa Temo failed to get the ball through the hoop but this was also because of the tight St Mary's defence and the long reach of Linda De-Ruyter who stifles a lot of ball.
The St Mary's attack were fast and accurate with Lynne McKenzie and Mary Jane Wills both shooting well.
