The first Town-Country table tennis was held in Invercargill in 1946.  The standard of play was not high as some had not been playing for long.  Two town players Mrs Hind and Miss M. Thomson played for Country and were responsible for winning 9 of the 13 games.
Miss Z. Deegan of Winton was the most promising, and used her excellent knowledge of lawn tennis to her advantage.
Mrs J. Ferguson, Mrs D.Checketts, and Misses S. Ferns and H. Dalgarno were impressive.
Honours in the country men's team went to Graham Hamilton, of Winton.
The first four top players for town were; F. Lee, R. Spence, D. Brown and J. O'Brien.
Spence played well and was a left handed tennis player who showed great eye hand co-ordination.
The teams were:
WOMEN

No. 2 - Mrs D. Checketts, Misses S. Ferns, H. Dalgarno, and T. Blair.
