The Southland Indoor Basketball selectors were not taking anything to chance when they selected a strong basketball team for the Otago game and the New Zealand championships in 1956.  They selected a training squad of 17 and have chosen most of the men that have displayed representative qualities in their club games and it is expected that a swift passing and shooting team will emerge after intense practices.

The star player, Jack Alabaster, has dropped out of the competitive side of the game but the return of Ian Payne from overseas will ensure the team is not weakened.  With B. Tall, P.A. Walker and Neville Hoskin all available the forward line will contain a great deal of sting.  These players are all capable of taking the ball downcourt with speed and precision and when on they will net every ball that goes to the basket.
Last Years  guards, B. Nicholson and R. Jackson are rightly included in the squad, and G. McKenzie an all-court exponent could make the team in this position.
The players chosen to report to the North Hall are as follows:
Forwards; B. Tall, L. Payne, C. Murray., J. Jamieson., N Hoskin. (all Invercargill). L. Morrison., N. Forde. (YMCA).
Guards; B. Nicholson., D. Jamieson, G. McKenzie., R. Jackson., (Invercargill)
J. Scobie., M. Eastlake., A. Parker., C. McDonald. (YMCA).

Ted Mortimer remembered that Neville Hoskin arrived out at Makarewa and was playing in the final of the Soccer the next day. He told Ted he had lost his football boots and did Ted have a spare pair. Nana told Neville there was an old pair under the ton of coal in the woodshed. He went out there and dug around and found them. He played in them the next day with half the sprigs missing. As Ted said this was the way Neville rolled.
