Riverton took the 1977 Central Western Compeition after beating Central Pirates 21-13. This had given the club a hold on the compeition for most of the 1970's with winning 1971,73,74,76. With all games completed Limehills has taken second position.
Riverton made the decision to play into the wind on their home game for the last game of the 1977 season. Knowing their home turf they knew that Central Pirate's lead of 7 was not enough to be able to win the game in the second half.
Riverton stamped their authority on the game which was led by first five eight, Murray Heath with Gavan Burns in support on the wing.
Riverton launched attack after attack and in the end Central Pirate's defence line was found wanting with Gavan Burns running in two tries. Norman Cleaver converting both.
Not only was Cleaver consistent with his kicking but he worked hard in the tight.
Alan Ronald and Peter Dawson were relentless in the loose and Gus Guise controlled the ball to the backline. These two former players, ensured that their presence was felt in the lineouts where they continually burst through to secure any loose ball.
It was noted that one of the reason Riverton was so successful on that day was the full-back Stephen Ashworth who tackled brillantly to stop the constant Central Pirates attacks, especially in the first half.
Ashworth was calm and cleared the ball precisely, with the head wind.
The deciding factor though in the end is that Riverton played 15 man rugby and worked brillantly as a team.
