One of Southland's greatest wins over their arch rival Otago was in 1957.  Southland won the toss and kicked off and were right on attack with a 75 yard kick from Diack of Otago.  This was pressure time but relief was felt when Southland was awarded a penalty.
Back came Otago again and, as expected, it was their forwards who were causing Southland trouble.  However, the firm dry ground suited Southland and they had their first opportunity to get points after six minutes when Otago forwards were penalised for being offside in a ruck.  Watt took the kick from 40 yards out and put the ball squarely between the uprights.
A long kick by full-back Lloyd Ashby put Southland deep into Otago territory for the second time. Driven back, Southland came again.  Watt breaking away with the ball at his toe.  Then Watson Archer picked up the ball beautifully and ran up the terrace touch, passing back to H. O'Neil when tackled by the Otago full-back J. Darling.
This movement was foiled and a penalty kick gained a lot of ground for Otago, but the ball did not roll out.  Full-back Ashby picked it up and ran, passing to Watson Archer and then Watt who carried play almost back to Otago's line again.  Another penalty kick gave Otago much needed relief.
With quarter of an hour gone, the game was still being played at a tremendous pace and Southland scored again.  This time Robin Archer kicked through the Otago backs and Watson Archer, with terrific pace, got to the ball at the same time as the Otago full-back.  The Southland forwards swarmed around hooker Hughie O"Neill getting the ball and battling his was over under the posts to score.  Watt converted.
Otago got their first points almost immediately after when winger P. McIlroy kicked a penalty.  But Southland bore in again, Watson Archer gaining a lot of ground with a spectacular run and Stoddart raced up with him.
Southland was held up, but ony temporarily.  With 21 minutes gone, Southland had scored again.  The backs were trhowing the ball around in thrilling fashion.
First Gilson cut infield but was stopped just yards short of the line, but the other Southaldn backs were there to support him.  The ball was finally given to Watt, and he ran up the grandstand touch to score easily.  He capped the movement off by converting.
With just 15 minutes untilhalf-time Otago got their first try.  Thsi was a fine piece of work.  Hotop getting the ball first and thens hooting it out to Levien.  He in turn ran a few yards before passing to the centre, Grant, who crashed over to score near posts.  McIllroy converted.
With two minutes to half-time Otago were awarded another penalty kick, taken by McIlroy. This missed.
Half Time - Southland 13   Otago  8.
Southlands and backs swung into action and were stopped close to Otago's line when a mark was taken. Robin Archer caught the kick and sent the ball across field.  The ball was completely missed by the Otago full-back and Gilson picked it up to run over unopposed to score.  Watt's conversion attempt failed.  Southland 16  Otago 8.
A beautiful break was made by Hotop
and after cutting through he passed to Diack on the wing and over he went.  McIlroy failed to covnert.
Otago evened the score after 13 minutes.  This time Levien kicked ahead, got up to the ball and kicked ahead again.  The only Southland man to save the situation was Soper, but Levien beat hi to the ball and scored.  McIlroy converted.  Southalnd 16 - Otago 16.
Southland went into the lead again after 20  minutes with one of the best tries of the match.
First of all the Southland backs had pace on and the ball shot out along the chain to Todd on the wing, and he scored.  Watt failed to convert.  Southland 19 Otago 16.
Southland was close to scoring again when Stodart kicked high towards Otago's line and Tremaine leaped high for the ball and got it, but he fell and the Otago forward swarmed in over him.
With five minutes to go Otago made a rally, but a penaly kick failed to find the uprights.
