Southland and Southland Country Rep teams in 1966.

Six of the 10 players who represented Southland at the national basketball tournament in Christchurch last year have again been selected for this year's championships which were played in Rotorua. The team is: Marie Burke, Dorothy Fahey, Margaret Gardiner, Nola McWhirter, Hilda McIntosh, Mary Patterson, Elizabeth Rowley, Elizabeth Robertson, Marilyn Sefton and Nancy White.
It is understood that Rosemary Lower (nee Beange) and Elaine Murdoch (nee Tattersfield) who were in the team last year, were not available for selection.  The youngest member of the team whose selection could have come as a surprise to those who watch only first grade games is the promising 15-year-old reserve grade player, Nola McWhirter.  Nola was selected last year for the Southland junior (under 17) team but because she was recovering from an injury she did not have a chance to show her ability. She has the potential to achieve higher honours and is on a strengthening programme to ensure she is right for tournament.
