Southland A & B teams named by selectors 1982.

Selectors for the Southland team were given a glimpse on what is on offer and Jack Borland, Kevin Laidlaw and  Bert Crooks, have announced their teams.  Injuries have plagued the selection process Paul Laidlaw (untility) Paul Macfie (first five eight)
Tony Hammington (flanker) Doug Murcott (prop) and Steven Pokere (centre) are unavailable for selection.
As a result of this several players have forced their way into a team, Brian Dickison and John Chittock, both from Eastern will be paired in the centres against Otago, Dickison has been in the Southland team since 1978 whereas Chittock will be making his debut after a promising game against town.
Central's Ian Clarke has taken the full-back booth, where Trevor Bokser  has secured the No. 8 position and this is also his first game in his preferred position, after several games at lock.
One of the best players in Towns win over Eastern, Barry Flynn, at flanker has forced his way into the team and locking partners will be Gus Dermody, who was unavailable last year and AllanByrne.
SOUTHLAND A.: Ian Clarke, Alan Monaghan, Brian Dickison, Kelvin Farrington, John Chittock, Brian McKechnie (captain,) Chris Hini, Trevor Bokser, Leicester Rutlege (vice captain) Alan Byrne, Fergus Dermody, Barry Flynn, Jim Fortune, Lex Chisholm, Bruce Welsh.
The Southland B team is to play the curtain raiser and there are a few players named in the team that could still have a chance to force their way into the A Team.  
The selectors have overlooked all other full-backs who took part on Country Day and have gone for Kevin Burns, from Pirates.
Woodland's winger Alan Sloan who has scored four great tries over his last two games over three days at Rugby Park joins Alan Hamilton on the wing.
Western's  Gerry Brown and Northern's Willie Katene will play mid field while, Collegiate's lock John Hughes will play on the flank.  Southern's Lindsay Crook and Central's Colin McDonald will be the locking pair.
SOUTHLAND B: Kevin Burns, Alan Sloan, Gerry Brown, Allan Hamilton, Willie Katene, Brent McKenzie, Wayne McCallum, Shaun Flynn, John Hughes, Lindsay Crooks, Colin McDonald, David McKee, Peter Henderson, Mark Crowther (captain) ray Christie.
RESERVES FOR A & B's: Stuart Cook, Brian Watson, Jimmy Sinclair, Selwyn Winter, Bruce Sheilds, Alister King, Gordon McKenzie, Peter Dunne.
