Southern win against Northern in 1970 Country Day

Southern looked the more superior team in the curtain raiser over Northern on country day 1970.  Northern fought back but were unable to topple the Southern team who were holding on for dear life.Half time score was 11-3 to Southern and then 17-13 at full time.

The Southern pack came out firing and were dominant in the first half and it took all of this time for Northern to wake up and play their game.  Ivan Berhnes the Northern full-back came alive and running into the back line, he created an extra man which found Southern wanting.  This was the form everyone was expecting and with the wind behind him in the second half he kicked long and accurate with both feet and his defence was very solid.
Half-back, Ted Menlove and Richard Roy made some good runs and were impressive for Northern. Upfront the 19 stone, 19 year old prop Ray Dickie showed his mobility while Mike Soper and Ron Donald were prominent in the forwards. Donald was trying to make play from No. 8 though and this could have resulted in his backs being starved of the ball.
Graham Crawford started well for Southern at full-back and looked a great prospect for the future, although he did not show an ability to kick of both feet.
