PictureShaun Taane played for Waikiwi
It is 1988 and YACCK is looking at club rugby in Southland.  There was some unconvincing wins in Div 2, with leaders, Marist and Tokanui winning over Drummond and Winton.  Riverton who was in third place had to dig deep to beat Collegiate.  Wrights Bush had the biggest win of the round over Otautau and Waikiwi also came from behind to beat Waiau Star.

Marist came out firing against Drummond and had the upper hand, but Drummond turned the tables after half time, by sending the ball out the back line.
Mark Hogan and Malcolm Dewe ran strongly and found gaps through Drummond's lacklustre tackling.
John Crooks and Brendan Harrington played hard in the tight and won good ball for their team.
Johnny Hazlett was playing his first senior game for Drummond and did not let himself down, he was supported well by prop, Nick Green.
As usual, John Lindsay read the game well at first five eight and Kevin Burns was handy at full back.
Marist:  Dallas Adams, Mark Hogan (1), Malcolm Dewe (2), Gary Vui (1) (4Con) (1PG)
Drummond:  Mike Cheilds (1), Kevin Burns (2PG)

Lex Chisholm, veteran leads  his young Tokanui forwards to beat Winton in 1988........

Tokanui played a much improved Winton, who had their best game of the season.  Winton's forward pack took on the Tokanui boys with reckless regard  and came close to scoring several times.
Tokanui's Mark Mitchell and Wayne Stronach were again the key for Tokanui and veteran, Lex Chisholm led his young troops well.
Russell Howden (prop), Mick Riordan, and John Moss used great technique in the front row to challenge the heavier Tokanui pack.
Rob Young, the young Scottish half back and Grant Anderson were the best of the Winton backs.
Tokanui: Lex Chisholm, Wayne Stronach (1) Mark Mitchell (1Con) (1PG)
Winton:  Kevin Dyer, Grant Anderson (1)

Geoff Gorton has good game for Riverton against Collegiate - Southland rugby 1988......

Collegiate played Riverton, who was third on the table and looked as though they were going to pull off an upset when leading 7-4 at half time.
Riverton had a few injuries and had a lock playing at half back, and one of their point scoring machine, Paul Aukistino off injured.
Once Riverton settled down though and players like Robbie Wills, Barry Frew, Geoff Gorton, Danny Aluni, and Campbell MacManaway putting in their all, they managed to turn the game around.
Warren Jones, Chris George (captain), and Jeff Price were solid for Collegiate.  They all worked hard around the field and managed to secure a lot of loose ball.  Peter Cooper was good in the backs.
Riverton:  Frank Carran,(1), Campbell MacManaway (2PG)
Collegiate:  Peter Cooper (1), Barry Taylor (1PG)

Waikiwi came from behind to beat a under strength Waiau Star.  Waikiwi were enthusiastic and also started some substitute players, which actually improved the team.
Graham Crosbie, Bert Mitchell, John Whittaker were good for Waikiwi.
Gerry Adams playing for Waiau Star at half back gave his all, but it was not enough.
Waikiwi:  John Whittaker, Brad Mitchell, (1) Shaun Taane (1) (1PG)
