Seaward Downs a force to be reckoned with in 1957....

It is hard to believe that not only did this small provinical town boast a rugby club but they were definitely a force to be reckoned with.........

Seaward Downs notched another win in the Southern Rugby Competition when it beat Tokanui, 21-3.  
SEAWARD DOWNS; F. Ferguson (1), R. McKenzie (1), A. Ferguson (1) and O. McCall (1)Graeme McKenzie ( 3 Con, 1PG).
TOKANUI; O. Frew (1 PG).
H. Buckingham worked hard for the Tokanui forwards while Thorn and Golden showed thrust in the backs.  
Gorge Road had no difficulty in beating Souther Star 
GORGE ROAD; H, McStay (1) S McKay (1 Con, 2 PG).
SOUTHERN STAR; M. Tainui, (1 PG).
The Gorge Road team proved more than a match for Southern Star, and the lightweights; Olsen, Thomas and Timpany were to the fore.  N. Skerret played a fine game at half and McKay was always looking for work on the wing.  For Southern Star, Tainui, Gudsell and Lamb, were the pick of the forwards and McColgan and Stronach, tried to open up the play in the backs.
