Richard Avery scores two great tries for Albion against Pioneer in rugby at Gore in 1972.....4/29/2016 Edendale moved into the lead of the Wallis Shield rugby competition in 1972. Their nearest rivals, Mataura and Pioneer both had surprise losses. Albion turned on their best display of the season with an upset 14-7 over Pioneer and they completely outplayed them in most positions. Graham Tait, Gavin Keith and Ray McGregor stood out in the Pioneer forward pack with Sandy Terry, Trevor Horrell and Owen Williams were the best of the back line. Alan Ritchie, Peter Webb, Ian Southern and Ray Mair led the Albion pack, with Neville Hazlett, Lou Maxwell, Richard Avery and Maurice Meechang were good in the back. Avery scored two good tries for Albion with George Mawdsley scoring the other, making the most of the opportunity when a Pioneer back slipped over while trying to clear the line. Maurice Henderson kicked one conversion. For Pioneer, Ray McGregor scored a try and Morrie Barclay kicked a field goal. Reference: Edendale moves into lead. The Southland Times. May 1972
