Pirates beat Marist 6-3 in one of the most exciting games in 1959.  The accurate kicking of Ted Mortimer, who kicked two penalty goals was the difference, with his opposite R. Bewley only managing one.

Marist looked the better team on the whistle, and were given the opportunity to get points in the first minutes with Pirates offending, but the penalty missed.
Pirates came alive and the forwards kept the pressure on the Marist attack, forcing them into mistakes.
Although Pirates were weak in the scrums, mauls and rucks, it was their defence that kept the Marist team at bay.
After Mortimer slotted a penalty, Marist's forwards whipped the ball out of a ruck, and the backs sent the ball through the back line to Flynn who scored in the corner.
Pirates hit back immediately when Mortimer kicked the ball dead between the posts from 40 yards out.
Marist were a bit confused about the amount of penalties they were conceding and H. O'Neill wanted clarification from the referee, Mr J. North.
Pirates sat on Marist's line trying desperately to cross it. It was close when lock, Greig Spencer broke away at one stage, who offloaded to Dawson who just could not get across.
Pirates breakaway, Smith snatched up the ball and dived for the line, Pirates claimed a try but the referee had a different story, and did not award it.
Marist supporters were screaming when J. Ward kicked hard downfield and followed up - it was a race to see who would get to the ball first when it rolled over the line.  Dawson won by a whisker and booted it into the dead ball area.
In the last five minutes, Marist threw everything at Pirates and forced them back on to their own 25, but unfortunately the final whistle beat Marist.
