Pirates beat Old Boys 1957

Old Boys were beaten 18-0 by Pirates in the Galbraith Shield game in 1957.
The promise shown by Old Boys in the previous two games was  not replicated and although there was nothing between the two teams in general play, the Pirates shone through on attack.  The trouble with Old Boys was they played as individuals and if they played as a team could have come close.
John Cowan, Winger, set Pirates alight with scoring two tries in the first half.  His first trying coming when he seized a ball close to the line when Old Boy's dropped the ball and on the second occassion he became an extra five eight and beat the defence with a diagonal run.
Good goal- kicking by Ted Mortimer and a opportunist try by J.Faithful completed their points.
Old Boys worked hard to score in the second half, but the Pirate's backs moved quickly on to the light blue backline and stifled any attacking movements.  To add to their woes Old Boy's missed two penalty shots from handy positions during the second half.
PIRATES: E.M. Mortimer., D. Hayes., B. Dawson., J. Cowan., J.S. Faithful., C. Dobbie., G. Matthews., B. Slade., D. Thomas., A. Jack., C. Fraser., T. Stevenson., R. Diack., R. Smith., E. McDowell.
