Invercargill's top outdoor basketball team, St Mary's A left for Auckland in 1956 to play in the New Zealand Roman Catholic basketball tournament.
The team coached by Father J. A. McCarthy said it was hard to predict how the team would perform as no other Southland team had competed in this tournament.

Five members of the team, including the whole defence line, represented Southland major that year.  This team was fourth in the national tournament just played four weeks earlier.
The team had a practice game against Southland Country the week before the Catholic tournament and beat them.
Captain, June Stevenson was one of the best centres in the local Invercargill competition and would be a key in Auckland. She worked tirelessly linking up her defence to the attacks, and had a good understanding of the game.  She was unlucky not to have made the Southland team.
Pam Williams led the defence line and she was improving with every game.
Eileen Fahey and Cecila Fahey, sisters, completed the team.  With their determination and their means to cope with pressure made it a formidable team to beat.

The team was:  J. Stevenson (Captain), R. Thomson, B. Black, E. Fahey, C. Fahey, A. Agnew, P. Williams, M. O'Neill, N. Cruickshank, C. O'Brien.
