Pam Welsh give gutsy performance in squash in 1983.....

The Invercargill Blue squash team had a handy lead in the 1983 interclub championships.
They played Riversdale and beat them five matches to nil.  Winners for Invercargill's team were; Sandy Johnston, Dianne Ellis, Jean McLeay, Jenny Smith, Sally Robertson. They beat the following Riversdale players; Shona Elder, Marie Anderson, Lois Miller, Cora Collins and Kaye Robertson.
It was a turn around for the Makarewa team from 1982 where they won the competition to 1983 where they had only one win for the season so far.  This was against Gore in which they won three matches to two.
Pam Welsh, No 1, inspired her players by her gutsy performance against Mary Smith. She went down in style by 2-9,7-9,9-4,9-5,9-5.
Joan Pankhurst had an easier game against Pam Williams, 9-4,9-5,9-4.
Georgina Ellis for Makarewa showed her strength round the court by beating Alwyn Perry 9-4,3-9,9-4,9-1.
Sandra Speden (Gore) played well to beat Marlene Polson 9-6,10-8,9-4.
In the closest game of the night, Joan Smith (Makarewa) withstood a strong challenge from Bev Campbell.

Mataura were unrelenting in its win over Invercargill II by three matches to two, ensuring it retained its unbeaten record.
Sharon Ferguson tried hard to overcome Robyn Meikle but went down 9-1,9-2,9-1.
Lois Marshall (Mataura) was too good for Jean McLellan and ended up winning 9-2,9-4,1-9,9-5.  The closest game of the night was that between Dorothy Chamberlain (Mataura) and Gail Taitaoko (Invercargill) with the former winning 9-7,6-9,3-9,9-7,9-7.
Pauline Morrison won Invercargill's first match with a win over Elizabeth McLennan 9-4,9-3,9-5.
Linda Herdman (Invercargill) was convincing in her win over Sue Stewart 9-0,9-4,9-7.

Pat Holmes finally gets ahead of Dianne Townsend to win in squash in 1983....

Old Boys relied on their lower order to give them their win over Gore 3 matches to 2.
Gore's number one, Val Lithgow played precise squash and was too good for Old Boy's Shirley Thomson winning 9-2,9-6,9-1.
The other Gore player to win was Margaret Meechang who beat Chris Morsink convincingly 9-0,9-1,9-1.
It took a while for Old Boy's Pat Holmes to get going but she managed to win over Dianne Townsend 6-9,9-3,9-6,9-1.
Lynne Wilson had to pull out all stops to beat Hilary Marshall 9-7,9-4,4-9,9-1.
Kaye Moreton started with a hiss and roar against Gore's Pam Dickson.  Pam hit her straps and slowed Moreton's momentum  but the latter won 9-0.9-7,7-9,9-4.

Bruce Cunningham beats Ian Dykes in interclub in 1983....

In the men's A grade Invercargill II beat Gore 10 points to six.  
In an epic match, Gore's Number one; Eric Small proved too good for Des Barnett in a tougher game than the score showed.
Bruce Cunningham (Gore) beat Ian Dykes of Inverargill.
Peter Adam had his best game of the season when he beat Richard Russell 9-6,9-3,9-3.
Steve Faulkner was given the task of trying to beat John Hawkes, he was not successful but did not give in and went down 9-4,9-3,9-3.

Riki Dallas beats Dave Small in squash interclub in 1983....

Invercargill 1 increased its lead on the points table in 1983 with Steve McDonald in excellent form when he beat Lester Smith 9-7,9-5,9-1.
Bob Bowman ran out the winner when he met Keith Tangney 9-3,10-9,9-0.
Fraser McKenzie had a good win over Kyle Tipene 9-4,9-1,9-1.
Ken McKenzie beat Ken Rewcastle 9-2,9-3,9-4.

Blues 1 played Blues II with the latter winning 3-1.  It was disappointing to see that Blues I could not put a fourth player on the court, which meant that they had a disadvantage from the start.
Dave Johnstone beat Bill Giller 9-1,9-5,9-2.
John Eddy beat Jody Dallas 9-1,9-1,9-4.
the match of the night was between Riki Dallas (Blues II) and Dave Small (Blues I).  Dallas ended up winning 9-10,-9-5,9-3,9-4.

The Southland junior team to attend the South Island junior squash championships in 1983 was:
Jody Dallas, Brent Surgenor, Adam Williams, Phillip Turner, Aaron Smail, Darren Fairweather, Nigel Russell, Scott Fairweather, Ata Sullivan, Erena Sullivan, Debra Keelty.
