Skelt beaten but not shamed in New Zealand Badminton Champs in 1953

Although the score was 15-1, 15-0 to Robson (Auckland)  against Paul Skelt in the final of the New Zealand Badminton championships, the score did not reflect the game.  Robson winning his fourth New Zealand championship was probably at the top of his career on this night and no-one in New Zealand could have come close that night.  It was the fact that he could play any stroke that badminton possessed that won him the game.  His skill and pace around the court were outstanding the it was poetry  to watch him.  His play was almost unorthodoxed which caught Skelt unawares.  It did not matter what Skelt done Robson threw his body at everything smashing drop shots and then looping drives to precisely drop just over the net which Skelt could not get to.
The best game of the night was the men's double final which saw J. E. Robson of Auckland and A.L. Scott of Otago beat Tony Skelt and Paul Skelt of Southland. 15-6 and 15-5.
It was probably the experience of playing in the big games that saw Robson and Scott take out the title, being the fifth New Zealand title they have won.  The Skelt brothers were not intimidated by the event and showed great understanding and determination with their smashing shots and clever cover shots, they also managed to return most shots put to them by the opposition.  Gradually Robson and Scott wore them down with the pressure and they were not disgraced in the loss.
