Mobility round the field and the fact that Northern were not afraid to try something different was the reason they were able to beat
Southern 24-15 in a Sports Trust game.
Ashley McGregor scored the first try after 12 minutes which was scored because of the constant pressure put on by the Northern forwards.
Northern grew in confidence and this showed by their backs kicking high up and unders and their following up of these.
Southern looked unsure of themselves and Northern made the most of this weakness.
During the early stages of the second half Southern fought back and Stuart Cook, half back combined well with his inside backs which meant they had the time to push through the defence.
This led to a number of forward attacks by Southern but it was a little too late to turn the game around.
The strong loose combination of Northern in Ken Stewart, Ashley McGregor and Andy Dickson gave them the upper hand. Lineouts were evenly contested with McGregor, Chris Hughes, Ken Paterson and Ray Christie all jumping well for Northern, while Gus Dermody, G. McKenzie and D. Lamb were just as good for Southern.
