Ngaire Townsend dominant in St Mary's win over Bluff in basketball (netball) 1946........

St Mary's had only a narrow win over Bluff in basketball in Invercargill in 1946.  The game is now called netball.  St Mary's won 22-20 in a tight game with Ngaire Townsend being dominant in the forwards and Mary Maloney in the centre.  May Muir saved the day for Bluff on more than one occasion.
The teams were:
St Mary's; L. Cross, N. Townsend, R. Donovan, K. Mahoney, M. Duggan, M. Maloney, J. Fillipini, S. O'Neill, J. McDonald.
Bluff; M. Horan, J. Hansen, M. Dixon, V. Gilson, S. Burtenshaw, J. Phillips, J. Marshall, P. Anglem, M. Muir.

Makarewa v Stuarts

Makarewa started the game with one centre short but their defence was too strong with Makarewa winning by 22-14.  The oustanding player of the game was M. Marshall.  Thella Davis had a good game for Stuart's in the forwards.

Collegiate v Pirates

The game was played at a fast pace with Collegiate having the superior shooters in Hilda Mackay and Emily Johnstone in the centre.  
Hard working for Pirates was Ruth Smithies in the defence third.
Miss D. Geddes was the referee.
Collegiate; N.Mathias, G. McCosh, L. Barrett, D. Mackay, D. Hope, E. Johnstone, M. Jensen, H. Mckay, I. Jennings.
Pirates; J. Morris, A. Clyma, H. Wallace, B. Duston, D. Duff, P. Duston, R. Smithies, J. Clyma, D. Radka.

Rata V High School
Both teams were very even in 1946, and at half time the score was even.
It took till half way through the second half for Rata to take control, with their forwards making more use of the ball.
Play was completely one sided to Rata with them winning 19-12.
Nancy Watson made some good saves for Rata and Molly Richardson was a much improved forward.
Molly Alabaster did some good shooting for High School and one of the most improved players was N. Holloway a High School centre.
Miss M. Jensen was the referee.
