Six riders flashed over the line in a blanket finish for the first race of Invercargill Amateur Cycling Club's first race of the season. It was the Avon Cup series which consisted of a 15 mile course to Myross Bush and return. R. McCorkindale just shaded G. Howie at the finishing line to take first place in a good time of 40min 48.4 sec.
B. Toomey was third with J. Holloway taking the fastest time of 37.9.4. On the return journey the riders were forced to ride against a strong side wind, but besides that the weather was perfect, and well suited for fast times. Of the 22 riders who faced the starter, several had gear difficulties and chain troubles. Two riders, J. Healey and W. Coats lost all chance when they both got punctures at the 7 mile mark.
A steady pace was set from the offset and at Kennington, G. Howie, K. Healey and R. Peak were going well, one minute behind the front markers and 15 seconds in front of another big bunch led by the Hardie brothers.
By the time they arrived at Roslyn Bush school, the scratch men led by H. Hubber, J. Holloway and Tait, had teamed up and were a minute behind the leaders in a strung-out field.
