It is April 1961 and the President's cup in Invercargill is well underway.  The main game this day was Marist v Bluff and it was highly anticipated that Bluff would win.  However, Marist had other ideas and played  a torrid game up front to secure a win 8-3 over Bluff.  It came by the way of two tries, one converted by Bill Scully (11). The teams were as follows:

MARIST:  G. Ward, W. Baird, W. Mulvihill, Derek Bulman, Bill Scully, J. Mahoney, D. Matthews,
W. Tautuhi, R. Smith, T. Fahey, J. Ross, B. O'Neill, H. O'Neill, B. O'Neill, K. O'Neill, Reserves: L. Holder, T. Sayers., R Bewley, J. Bourke, J. Fitzgerald.

BLUFF:  E. Hini, J. Mitchell, J. Brown, D. Wishart, R. Renz, G. Horsfall, W. Patterson, R. Walker, K. Fyall, J. Jamieson, R. Ryan, R. Gilmore, I. Flutey, H. Keil, M. Vella, D. Forde, D. Shaw, M. Cox,
G. Dawson, R. Finnerty.

I have a newspaper clipping here about that game...yacck is right the score was 8-3 to Marist but it was T. Fahey that scored the try. I was wondering if this was a relation to John Fahey but after some digging found no it is not. T. Fahey is still alive though and lives in Otatara.
Anyway the game went as...
It was a bright sunny afternoon and the game drew a great attendance. The win saw the right for Marist to play Pirates in the final of the Presidents Cup.
A resourceful Marist pack took Bluff on and won. Neither team did justice to their skills and it was a game when over-kicking, solo runs and weak tackling made a poor spectacle for the public.
However, the game was interesting in the fact that once the Marist backs got into their game they showed their class. Bluff was not the force of previous seasons, with the forward core not being effective as usual.
Bluff opened the play after 30 minutes with a Penalty Goal to Rueben Walker.
A minute later Marist replied with a try from Derek Bulman, centre three quarter. This came about by a precise kick from J. Mahoney that went deep into Bluff's territory, the bounce of the ball went against the defence, Bulman was in the right place at the right time as it went over goal line and pounced on it.
This was converted by W. Scully.
After half time Marist played with the wind against its back and showed what their backline was capable of. It did let a golden opportunity pass, with the line at the mercy of two Marist backs, W. Mulvhill, mucked around and instead of pressing his body onto the ball he was beaten for possession.
Marist forwards, and in particular, H. O'Neill, T. Fahey, and L. Holder ensured that their team had the advantage. Fahey capatilised after Mahoney had kicked the ball from half way, which he had grabbed out of Bluff's, Hiini hands.
Scully failed to convert.
In the last quarter both teams went at it with a will and exchanges became heated with boots and fists flying.
There were several stoppages for injuries.
Two tired packs fought it out till the final whistle, with H. O'Neill retiring late in the game.
The referee was Mr B. Thomson.
