Welcome to Yacck - we hope you have great pleasure in reading the stories from the past and would love you to make positive comments for everyone to enjoy. The Yacck Team.
In 1957, Marist established itself as the leader in the Galbraith Sheild competition, when it beat Star 6-0. Considering Star is the bottom of the table they put up a good fight, and it was not until the end of the game that Marist could breath easy.
After about 16 hours of solid rain, the ground was saturated which meant it was going to be a forward struggle, which it was but you would have to say that both packs were even. The best forward on the day was the Star lock, Mathieson,. He used his height to his advantage and help out his halfback all day. Kuiti, the side row man also played a solid game and at times, harrassed the Marist inside backs.
Doug Frampton the Star half back played a good game and many times pulled his team out of danger with his accurate line kicking. When on attack he looked dangerous and came within a whisker of scoring.
The Star five-eight W. Kini would be an asset to any back line, his tackling was deadly and once in flight was hard to stop.
In the Marist pack the O'Neill brothers played with vigour and won a fair share of the ball, and on the side of the scrum, A. Fahey did his share of the work. First five eight, Bob Willis, was steady and at times looked dangerous to the Star defences as he dodged his way through. Reilly at full back again played a solid game and with his accurate kicking got his team out of danger time and time again. For Marist, Reilly kicked a penalty goal in the first five minutes and Flynn scored a try with five minutes to go.
