Welcome to Yacck - we hope you have great pleasure in reading the stories from the past and would love you to make positive comments for everyone to enjoy. The Yacck Team.
Marist drew with Old Boys in 1970 competition by scoring a last minute try. The try was started by Syril Crosbie (fullback) but unfortunately for Marist he was unable to convert it, but he was the outstanding hero for Marist along with John Mahoney and Maurice Burke, who made decisive breaks with their quick running on to the ball, and their kicking skills shows intelligence and just not aimless kicking.
These backs were well supported by half-back Dave Shanks who has a great which finds his backs at the precise moment.
In the forward pack, Frank Oliver, Dave Cournane, Anton McLean and Vince Nally played like men possessed. Pat Killeen and Luke Fahey supplied most of the attack in the forwards and Ken McRae at hooker stole a string of tight heads before changing places with Cournane.
Murray West was a great new find for Old Boys as a prop forward, he was everywhere, letting Marist know he was around by crashing through rucks, lineouts and leading the loose forwards.
Bill Welsh who scored a great try played text book rugby and his all round general play kept Old Boys in the game. George Lawrence, Neil Crozier, and Lin Walker all toiled hard in the tight.
In the backs, Bob Burgess and Don Rae supplied most of the penetration and Geoff Barnes must have been getting frustated at the unnecessary attention he was receiving from the referee during the game. Dave Clayton showed moments of brillance but unfortunately he was injured in the final moments of the game.
