Marist and Georgetown face promotion relegation match in senior cricket compeition in 1976.....1/18/2016 Club Cricket in 1976 saw Marist needed a win over Old Boy's to avoid a relegation/promotion match in the Invercargill senior competition in 1976. In 1976 Georgetown was at the bottom but it would have taken only one more loss for Marist and a win for Georgetown to reverse the placings. It was important that they ended up beating Old Boys by bundling them out for 73 and then replied with 116. Pace bowler, Wes Melville, took seven Old Boy's wickets and captain John Mahoney saw Marist grab the lead with a skilful batting show. However, in the second innings Old Boys were a different team and with a score of 141 for four wickets, they had a lead of 57.
Neil McArthur who has been playing sublime cricket and had selectors of Hawke Cup watching him, and Des Barnett, Neale Thompson and Dennis Cocks had all returned to the Old Boys side. They did not want to find themselves in the same position as the previous year where Marist snatched a victory in the fourth innings when Old Boys had declared. Georgetown faced Invercargill and had a target of 223. Lyall Williams, captain and opener put on a fine century.
