Makarewa took the squash lead in the Invercargill competition in 1978.  In the A Grade, John Colhoun starved of a great challenge from Inverargill's Steve McDonald, to get a very deserved win.
Makarewa's, Geoff Adams also showed great determination to be ahead of Alistair White, 7-2 in the fifth set, but some unforced errors by Adams saw him lose the game.
Ted Mortimer and Warren Boniface secured the other two wins for Makarewa to give it a deserved win on the men's A grade ladder.
Invercargill 2 kept its hopes alive with a galant 4-0 win over Gore.  Phil Arnold after losing 2 sets to 1  lost his way and Robin Goodall applied pressure in the fourth and ran out the winner.
Blues and Old Boy's both determined to win all had hard fought games with Blues holding a narrow margin over Old Boys.  Neil Simpson played well enough to be leading Des Barnett 3-1 but with a marathon game of 1 hour 40 minutes it was obvious the fitter man was going to win and this was Barnett who took the last set 10-8.
The crucial game was between Ian Dykes and Trevor Kerr, this was an interesting game as Kerr had beaten Dykes the previous weekend in the Blues open championships but Dykes reversed the result with a determined win.
