Invercargill and Pirates had big wins over their opposites in the Invercargill competition in 1963..... Invercargill beat Marist 28-9 and Pirates beat Bluff 32-6.
Pirates line was not crossed in their win over Bluff in 1963. It was Bluff in the opening 10 minutes, whose forwards kept play deep in Pirates territory, and it looked like it was going to be a great battle. But that was Bluff's lot as the Pirates forwards started to win ball and provide their backs with what they needed. It was not long before J. Tait sliced through the defence to send Robin Welsh over for a good try.
In the second half Bluff came out firing and the forced a couple of penalties that were successful, kicked by R.Ryan.
The Pirates half back, L. Williams threw skilled passes to his inside players, J. Tait and K. Harmon. These players along with Welsh gave their wingers, D.K. Munro and Broad plenty of opportunities.
Greig Spencer had a great game being back with is old club team after spending most of the season playing in Wellington.
He scored a great try 67th minute when he picked up the ball and ran 20 yards, knocking off Bluff players to score.
Pirates: R. Welsh (2), B.Broad, D.K. Munro, G. Spencer, W. Grice, K. Harmon (1), Owen Brown (1PG) (4 Con).
Bluff: R. Ryan (2 PG)
G. Barrett scores 22 points for Invercargill against Marist in 1963......
The Invercargill - Marist game was marred with a lot of scrappy play. The St Johns ambulance men ran on to the field a couple of times for injuries to B. Sinclair and J. Fogarty.
G. Barrett scored 22 of his teams 28 points.
Marist scored first when promoted third grader, J. Hair came out of a ruck with ball and kicked a nice little ball to D. Bulman who went over for the try.
Invercargill: G.Barrett (2) (2 Con) (4 PG) H. Townsend (1DG)
Marist: D. Bulman (1) A. Hardiman (2PG)
