The combined Central Western rugby competition in 1983 was won by Ohai Nightcaps when they beat Winton 25-11.  Ohai Nightcaps were without three of their main players who were representing Southland.
Winton did not disgrace themselves in the impossible conditions and their set pieces were a credit to them with more often than not driving Ohai Nightcaps off the ball.
It was the fitness of Ohai Nightcaps that saw them play good rugby for the full 80 minutes, with their backs having the advantage over their opposites.
Ohai Nightcaps:  Moli Piripi (2) Kevin Dixon (1) Steven Bulmer (2PG)
Winton:  Brian Gillan, Irwin Davidson, Stephen Boyle (1PG)

Des Gill scores for Wrights Bush against Riverton in 1983....

As expected Wrights Bush beat Riverton 19-9.  Nine of Wrights Bush regular players were missing and this was evident in the first half as Riverton played an agressive game and kept bursting through the defence.
Riverton were trying to upset the tall Wrights Bush lock, Colin McDonald and Bush were only 7-0 up at half time with the wind behind it.
Riverton used the wind to full advantage in the second half but try as they may they could not convert the possession into points.
Bush scored their tries mainly against the run of play and ran the ball from their own half.
Wrights Bush:  Gavin McPherson, Graham Strang, Des Gill (1) Herbie Brown (2 Con) (1PG)
Riverton:  David Frew (2PG) (1DG)

Dave Wilson continues his good form in 1983 to beat Limehills.

Drummond scored their second win of the 1983 season when they beat Limehills 19-11.
The forward pack for Drummond were more dominating with John Kincaid and Graham Cochran leading the way.
John Lindsay for Limehills was supported well by Steven Clearwater in the backs and Drummond saw winger, Dave Wilson continue his good form for the season.
Keith Finn, Russell Foster and Maitland Leith were the best of the Limehill's forwards.
Drummond:  Steven Dyer, Herb Clark, Dave Wilson, Gary Horner (1) Paul Kincaid (1PG)
Limehills:  John Lindsay, Stewart Clearwaterh (1), Trevor Kean (1PG).

Richard Henderson scores for Waiau Star to give Central Pirates a fright in 1983

Central Pirates were lucky to come away with a win against Waiau Star when they beat them 7-4 in the Central Western competition in 1983.
With the sodden ground most of the play was in the forwards which resulted in the low scoring.
Central Pirates:  Alistair Calvert (1) Wayne McCallum (1PG)
Waiau Star:  Richard Henderson (1)
