Drummond caused the upset of the season in the Central Western Rugby competition in 1976 when they beat Riverton 17-6 with Drummond scoring three tries to none.
Drummond were playing on their home ground and except for the first five minutes of the game did not let Riverton have a sniff.  Hooker, John Kincaid won at least five tight heads and with his forward pack on fire they won most of the scrums and mauls. He was ably supported by Cliff Cochran and David Kennedy.
Ken Russell led from the front and once he had got his team to wear down the Riverton pack, there was no looking back.
Trevor Wilson at halfback and John Lindsay at first five eight understood each other perfectly and they set up play nicely for Graham Spittle who found the gaps needed for the win.  Unfortunately he went off injured but the way the team was playing, it did not hinder them.  There was thoughts that they would miss the services of John Patterson, but Wilson was just as competent.
Riverton was without half-back, Murray Heath, but this was not the problem, Riverton just looked jaded and nothing could get them stirred.
Riverton were down 11-0 at halftime and their supporters were expecting them to come out fired up, they did, but it only lasted a few minutes.  Henry Agnew in the tight and Wayne Soper in the loose, prevailed, with Gavan Burns and Phillip Laurie in the backs.
Drummond: John Lindsay (1) T. O'Meara (1) (1Pg) (1Con), A. McLeod (1)
Riverton: Norman Cleaver (1Pg)
