Old Boys travelled to Australia in 1963 for a four game tour leaving on April 7th.  The week before they played a New South Wales team that was travelling New Zealand and beat them 35-3.
Old Boys scored eight tries, four conversions and a drop goal to win 35-3.  The New South Wales Bank (Sydney branch) had only one game left against Canterbury University in Christchurch.  Their record was a 3 loss 1 win.  Old Boy's took control of the game from the first whistle and even though NSW got their share of the ball, mainly from the scrum in the first 20 minutes, J. Smeaton (Western Southland), settled down and more than held his own.  Led by Ken Borland, the Old Boys pack played more as a team and kept bursting through the NSW defence going over the advantage line.
Old Boys had the faster backs as was seen many a time when wingers, W. Nicholson and J. Louden outpaced their opposites.  Even though the inside backs were quick to get the ball out their hands let them down on a number of occasions.
J. James (Otautau) first five eight and N. Cuff second five eight were quick to slip through gaps and got their side out of difficult situations a number of times.  Half Back J. Rance sent off some good passes and was well covered by his forwards.
D. Murphy of the Collegiate club played a safe game at full back with his handling of the ball good and did not get flustered under high balls.
