PictureDonna McKenzie who usually plays for James Hargest High School in first grade in 1971.
It is 1971 and the Rata lost their place at the top of the table when they drew with Brigadiers in netball, Invercargill.
This was the upset of the day as Brigadiers were near the bottom and they also lost goal attack, Lesley Hayes.  Goal shoot, Jackie Miller struggled without the support in the circle until wing attack, Annabelle Blue moved into shoot.

Brigadiers defences; June Murphy and Bessie Brooking read the game well and kept the Rata shooters on their toes.  Lee Wainui, wing defence, was always available to take any intercept back to her forwards.
Centre Kathy Wainui was determined, taking the ball well through the court and pressuring the Rata attack.
Lesley Hayes and Jackie Miller combined well, until the latter was injured and Hayes had to work the circle herself, until half time.
Rata were a bit stunned at the Brigadiers play.  Robyn Broughton was the driving force behind Rata's attack with well timed passes to find shoots, Wendy Clark and Kathy Philpott.  Val Lithgow at centre linked well to bring the attack and defence together.
Defences, Cherryl Earle and Lynley Hale guarded the circle expertly, with Hale gathering in a lot of rebounds.

Makarewa V Hargest

Makarewa's goal defence, Myra McClelland, was well supported by goal keeper, Ann Dunlop to give their team a huge win over Hargest in 1971.  These two defences turned many ball around to send it back to their shoots at the other end of the court.
Christine McLay and Ann Langford played their usual fast game, with long fast passes, which made it impossible for the Hargest defence to keep up.
Liz Hamilton and Carolyn Shepherd in the shooting circle were nippy iand Shepherd's 'no look' pass often fooled the opposition.  Although Shepherd did not have one of her better shooting game, she always got the rebound.
For Hargest, Maxine Watson, wing defence,  took numerous intercepts. Sue McKenna connected well at centre to be the link between defence and attack.
Hargest missed their usual players, Susan Eunson and Donna McKenzie, but their substitutes, Fiona Christie and Robyn Young gave it their all in an unfamilar team.
Shoots, Petra Tyssen and Jill Warden found the more experienced Makarewa defence intimidating, but did not give up and kept on trying.

Collegiate v Southland Girls High School

Collegiate beat Southland Girls High School, 29-17, but did not have everything their way.  Collegiate had experienced players in the likes of Lynley Hale, Margaret Anderson and Marian Hay with the High School team playing without three of their regular players.
At half time High School were only 1 down, but Collegiate's shoots, Hay and Wilson were not challenged after half time.
St Marys Black  V St Marys Blue

St Mary's Black played St Mary's Blue with the former, Black coming out the victors - 35-29.
With Nancy Buchanan in the centre linking well with Monica Burns at goal attack, Blue had their hands full.
Blue's goal attack, Jenny Suddaby gave her team some hope, combining well with Kathy Boyle at centre,   but after half time Burns and Clair Cosgrove poured on the pressure to give Black an unbeatable lead.
