Waikiwi Warriors went on to beat Greenroofs Panthers in the Ellis Cup Rugby League cup in Invercargill in 1983.
Wayne Bonner was the key to his team, Warriors getting the win and his hunger for work was the reason why he managed to score two tries, and came up short on scoring two more.
Junior Ua was impressive at centre and he was supported well by Bill Taua who set his backs up well.
Kevin Pou in the backs used his change of pace effectively, more often than not beating the defence.
Hana Mitchell and Tom Taigai played well in the forwards.
Panthers had a rearranged back line which still had not got their combination going.
Des Jacobs, tackled well and ran strongly.
Front Rower Koro Raimoana had a good performance and kept Panthers in the game with good rucking. Centre, Mike McDonald and Simon Terry were dangerous when given the opportunities.
Warriors:  Ronnie Pou (1PG) (1Con) Murray Wilson (1) Wayne Bonner (2)
Panthers:  Craig Winter (1) Raimoana (1PG) (1) Des Jacobs (1PG)

Bill Tatana leads his team to a 36-8 win over He Tauaa in 1983....

Leopards beat He Tauaa convincingly by 36-8 in the curtain raiser to the game above.  Bill Tatana lead his team well encouraging them to scored three tries in the first half and five tries in the second half.
He was also involved in the try of the day when He Tauaa's Richard Mackie lost the ball on his own goal line and P. Ihaka retreived the ball beautifully and off loaded to the fast 17 year old Gary Waddick.  With change of pace he managed to get past his defenders and give the ball to Monty Joseph who saw the open line and sprinted to score.
Although He Tauaa could not lift themselves, there were some players that showed promise.  They were; Bruce Williams (hooker), Thomas More (Loose Forward), Mike Strongmin (full back) and Richard Mackie.
Leopards:  Monty Joseph (3) Steve Walker (2) (1Con) Gary Waddick (1) P. Tupou (1) Bill Tatana (1 Con)
He Tauaa: Bruce Williams (1) Colton Lambert (1Con) (1PG)
