It was all about the rugby team from the port in 1954,55 and 56.  The Bluff team managed to win the Galbraith Shield in the Invercargill championships for these three years.
In June 1956 in the 7th round Bluff managed to beat Star, 15-6 with the Bluff forward pack dominating the game again.

The game was scrappy at Waverley Park, but even though Bluff managed to starve Star of the ball they did have trouble crossing the Star line.  They only managed this once, working well as unit the Bluff forwards were too strong for Star's lighter forward pack.  They breached a weak defence many times but managed to lose the ball through bad handling close to the scrum.
The field was cutting up, and was greasy which meant the ball did  not get out to the three-quarters .
Second five-eight, R. Rouse played a solid game for Bluff. He got through a lot of work and left bluff nine points in front at half-time by kicking three penalty goals late in the half.  He had missed thre earlier.  Rouse did not receive the best of the services from P. Ryan who distinguished himself by drop-kicking a good goal early in the second half.
Full-back, N. Miller and winger J. Robinson were also sound in the backline with the former handling the ball well when he kicked ahead, followed up and retrieved the ball to score near the corner.
J. Jamieson the Bluff No. 8, covered well and Bowen won a lot of ball in the lineouts.
R. Anderson the hooker, was the only Star man to catch the eye.  He played a good loose game.
Fifteen points behind, Star rallied late in the second half to score six points.  Harrington a lock crossed from a maul on the Bluff line and a few minutes later Milne kicked a penalty goal.
